FAQ
- Warning: The information here is general in nature only. You should allow extra shaft length and extra power/thrust if you are operating offshore or in choppy waters, or areas with strong currents, tides, or wind. Each boat is different and we cannot offer specific advice for your vessel.
- What Motorguide shaft length should I buy?
- Measure the height from the waterline to the top of your deck where the trolling motor is being mounted, then add 25 inches (for saltwater use). For example if you measure your top deck to water line is 33 inches you would add 25 inches which equals 58 inches, round up and you would consider selecting a 60 inch shaft model.
- If you are measuring an existing motor, the shaft length is the length of the shaft below the head to just above the motor.
- You should keep in mind when you take your measurement to allow for varying weights in the boat due to fuel, people, batteries and other loads that can vary.
- If in doubt, you may consider buying the longer shaft length as you can adjust the height shorter when using the motor. However, keep in mind that when the motor is stowed the shaft will protrude further into the boat the longer it is.
- What thrust Motorguide should I buy?
- There are a few considerations here. Generally a good starting point is the size of your boat. Boats less than 6 metres or those with an outboard of less than 100 HP will usually be suited to a 12V/55lb thrust motor. Boats greater than 6 metres or those with an outboard greater than 100 HP will usually need a 24V/80lbs thrust motor (or larger). Keep in mind if you opt for the larger motor you typically require 2 or 3 batteries instead of the single battery to power a 12v model.
- What are some of the differences between Xi5 models and Xi3 models?
- The trolling motor head, motor, GPS module, hand remote and shaft are common parts between these models.
- The transmission (part that turns the motor left and right) and housing and foot release vary between these models (see photos on listings).
